How it all started.....

I spent Christmas 2014 with my girlfriend in Norwich. I may have been under the influence (of all the carols), but I started composing a chorale at her piano. Then that 16th note/triplet figure immediately followed. Gradually the whole piece formed from there. You might be interested to know that the last section (when the drums come in) is constructed using the haiku numbers 5,7,17; it's got 5 beats to the bar, in 7 bar patterns, with 17 repeats. On the other hand you might not……

Lyrics

This final section leads up to a carol, sung in Latin, using the melodies first heard at the beginning of the piece, but now in 5/4 and slightly adjusted. I'd taken the words for Tree Cathedral from the Catholic Requiem Mass, so I followed the same idea, and took the words for Jubiláte from the Catholic Christmas Day Mass. Basically the carol is about singing joyfully, or in latin ‘Jubiláte’.
